Introduction: The Best Restaurants
|
|
|
Chez Caroline Café Restaurant and Pâtisserie (Kathmandu; tel. 263070): Located in the elegant Baber Mahal Revisited shopping/dining arcade, this casual little open-air French cafe serves excellent sandwiches and desserts.
Ghar-e-Kabab (Kathmandu; tel. 221711): This restaurant on Durbar Marg has for years served the best Indian food in Kathmandu. The chicken tikka almost melts in your mouth.
Yin Yang Restaurant (Kathmandu; tel. 425510): With an attractive little terrace, this Thamel Thai restaurant does a very respectable job of duplicating the vibrant flavors of Thai food.
Thamel House (Kathmandu; tel. 410388): For traditional Nepali food in a restored historic home, Thamel House is convenient, economical, and not overly touristy. The food goes beyond basic dal bhat tarkari, and service is usually very good.
Bukhara (Kathmandu; tel. 272550): Located at the Crowne Plaza Soaltee hotel, this outpost of an upscale Indian restaurant chain brings Moghul cuisine to Kathmandu. The decor is as exotic as you could hope for on a trip to the Himalayas.
Al Fresco (Kathmandu; tel. 272550): Sometimes, even in far-off Nepal, you just have to have some good pasta, and this is the place to get it in Kathmandu. Located in the Crowne Plaza Soaltee, Al Fresco uses primarily imported ingredients, which are what makes the food here so much better than that at other Italian restaurants around town.
The Chimney Room (Kathmandu; tel. 248999): Inspired by Boris's, the first restaurant to open in Kathmandu years ago, The Chimney Room, located inside the Yak Yeti Hotel, serves Russian specialties such as borscht, Chicken Kiev, stroganoff, and shashlick.
Fuji Restaurant (Kathmandu; tel. 225272): Imagine eating Japanese food in a historic gambling pavilion that is reached by a footbridge over a small pond and looks as if it were moved to Kathmandu from the back gardens at Versailles. Eclectic and very memorable.
Mike's Breakfast (Kathmandu; tel. 424303): Although Mike's is in fact open for lunch and dinner too, it is at breakfast that this place really shines. Bottomless cups of coffee (a rarity in Nepal) and huge breakfasts are the perfect way to start a serious day of temple touring.
Caravanserai Café (Pokhara; tel. 22122): Located at the Shangri-La Pokhara Vill-age hotel, this restaurant offers great prices, a beautiful setting, and reasonably professional service. Although there isn't a view of the mountains, the food makes up for this shortcoming.
