Trekking Routes: Less-Traveled Treks Frommer
If you have already done the more popular treks in Nepal or want to avoid the more crowded ones (even though they are the most spectacular routes), consider getting off the beaten path. For the most part, these are not treks that can be done on your own, and in fact, the Nepali government requires that you go with a licensed trekking company on the Mustang, Dolpo, around Manaslu, and Kanchenjunga treks. Special high-priced trekking permits are also levied on people who trek these routes. The reason for the restrictions is to limit the number of trekkers visiting these regions. Hordes of trekkers have made lasting changes on areas such as Annapurna and Solu-Khumbu, and these changes are not necessarily for the good. If you do one of these restricted treks, you will be experiencing Nepali culture that has been less tainted by contact with the outside world. With any luck you won't see a single Chicago Bulls T-shirt on a trek through Mustang or Dolpo. In my opinion, the benefits of trekking through regions rarely visited by foreigners is well worth the costs (financial, physical, and time).
