Introduction: The Best Museums Frommer
The Patan Museum, Patan: This is Nepal's newest major museum and it's housed in part in Patan's former royal palace. The building has been expertly restored and the museum displays, aimed as much at foreign visitors as at Nepalis, are professionally mounted and highly informative.

The National Museum, Kathmandu: Although the displays at this museum are not nearly as well lit as those at the Patan Museum, the collections of Hindu and Buddhist iconography is the finest in the country, an excellent introduction to the kingdom's religious heritage.

Natural History Museum, Pokhara: The collection of butterflies and moths, assembled over many years by a British entomologist, is absolutely fascinating.

Mustang Eco-Museum, Jomosom: Located in the remote village of Jomosom, on the edge of the Upper Mustang region, this small museum provides an excellent introduction to the area, which centuries ago grew wealthy from the salt and grain trade between Tibet and India. Until recently, Upper Mustang was closed to foreigners.
