Holiday Travel Can Be a Breeze! By Amy Ziff, Editor-at-Large
November 5, 2002
Holiday season is already upon us, but if you haven't made your plans yet, all hope is not lost. If you act quickly, there are still opportunities to take advantage of some lingering airfare sales, especially to European and Canadian destinations. You may also be able to find a vacation package that is just right for you this holiday season, even at the last minute. Or, consider a cruise for the whole family; the prices are surprisingly affordable.
AIRLINE TIPS: Given the turmoil in the travel industry, particularly with the airlines, this year may bring more savings where flights are concerned. You can expect to see fare sales throughout the season, although the dates and destinations are likely to be limited. Maintaining flexibility on your travel dates and destination allows you to take advantage of better fares.
When traveling by air this holiday season, as with all peak travel times, you want to be prepared for the increased potential for delays. The outlook this travel season is good since travelers are more familiar with the safety policies and procedures post-September 11. Most passengers know the items to avoid bringing to the airport and can pack accordingly. However, it never hurts to leave extra time at the airport at this time of year, because many more people than average travel in November and December.
Another good reason not to push the limits of time: recent changes in fare rules and regulations. Missing your flight may be more costly than simply waiting for the next flight. It's advisable to check out the specifics with your carrier prior to traveling since each airline is somewhat different. If you are planning on traveling with a great deal of luggage, you should also check the new baggage size and weight restrictions to make sure you are within the limits.
LODGING TIPS: Look for low-price guarantees, Web specials, loyalty-program deals, and packages for greater savings. Some deals are non-refundable, so be sure to read the fine print. Travelocity is always a good place to start looking for hotel deals, packages, and last-minute travel specials.
PACKAGE TIPS: Getaways are now offered at the last minute, 14 days to three hours before a plane leaves. These last-minute deals are especially helpful for the procrastinator. However, when shopping for a price-saving package look for the following three things to make sure you're not disappointed:
- Know what is and isn't included in your package. Air and hotel are the most common features, but some may include airport transfers, rental cars, and/or excursions.
- Be able to choose your brands (for airline and hotel) as well as selecting your flight times and hotel brand. These choices can make all the difference in your trip. You don't want to get stuck with unsavory layovers or accommodations that lack the amenities you desire. Start by looking at Travelocity's Last-Minute Deals area, where you'll be able to view package details before you're committed to purchasing the package.
- Look for real availability. Beware of sneaky sell-outs that try to substitute other destinations in place of the one you prefer.
CRUISE TIPS: Deals abound. Whatever your demographic there are sailings to suit you. At the holidays, be sure to remember the following:
- When selecting a cruise, look for or inquire about promotional discounts, shipboard credits, and stateroom upgrades.
- Look for programming that is tailored to your interests, ranging from kiddie camps to culinary extravaganzas. Ships vary so a little research will prove worthwhile--start with some of the tools offered by Travelocity in our ship profiles area, such as deck layouts and professional reviews.
- If you want the best service, compare passenger-to-staff ratios and not the size of ship.
- Consult the vessel's deck plan to check your placement and room size before choosing a room.
CAR RENTAL TIPS: Always secure your reservation in advance, especially during the holiday season. Car-rental companies have a fixed number of cars in their fleet and it's important to make sure a car is waiting for you upon arrival. It's recommended that you book through a reputable company, and that you know your total price in advance of booking. That means the car price PLUS any taxes and fees that can significantly alter the overall cost of your rental car. It's not always easy to tell if a quoted price includes all these taxes and fees (although if you stick to Travelocity, you can be sure it does). Know in advance whether or not your insurance covers your rental car as well so you do not purchase any unnecessary and costly coverage.
In the end, whether booking months, weeks, days, or hours in advance of traveling, being prepared makes all the difference.
