Getting Away for Romance or Just Getting Away?
By Amy Ziff, Editor-at-Large

January 21, 2003

The telltale signs are out reminding us (perhaps torturing some of us) to get ready: Tis the season of love. Chocolates, candies, and flowers are stocked and swelling shelves, and gifts are at the ready. But what happens for those who don't regularly practice the Hallmark holiday tradition? How do you plan if you aren't naturally a romantic, or need to keep tabs on the expense? And what do you do if you still have no date?

Never fear; help is here and travel is the answer.

For the dateless what better remedy is there than leaving the singles scene behind and taking a trip? Visit that relative you've been meaning to see, explore a city you've never been to, or take yourself off the beaten path for something more exotic. Your best bet will be grabbing a friend (partner in crime) for this mission. Every Thelma needs a Louise, every Ernie needs a Bert, and you can't beat the price of a Last Minute Deal. You can't book one of these last-minute getaways until 14 days before you leave, but can start to look for ideas now. Just the knowledge that you're going will change your entire view of Friday the 14th.

For those of you with a date, the many options ahead of you may be truly overwhelming. Or it just may be, much to the chagrin of your amour, that you're too busy to plan Valentine's Day. Whether you're having trouble winnowing down the options or if you just don't know where to start, here are some thoughts to help you be romantic. Because as any true romantic knows, it takes practice to perfect the art of romance.

This year the holiday falls on a Friday, so for the particularly cost-conscious, you could consider spending Thursday night in a hotel and waking up to start your Valentine's Day off right. By staying Thursday you can avoid the two-night minimum stay required by many hotels on the weekend, and can also take advantage of a lower weekday rate. Sneak away from work for a smitten afternoon and arrive late the next morning--but be prepared for people to ask why you're smiling.

Many hotels will do the hard work for you. They have special offerings and can include a meal at the hotel's restaurant or a free spa service. (Loews hotels even have something special for your pets!) How high will your romantic rating soar if you arrange a gourmet meal follwed by champagne and strawberries in the room, topped off with breakfast in bed the following morning? A bit over the top? Consider other a la carte or package options including taking a luxurious soak with foaming bubble bath in the big hotel tub (bring your favorite bubbles from home), or ordering a massage for two or a room with a private balcony and roses.

Getting away can be beneficial for you and for your romance without breaking the bank!
