Getting through Airport Security with Ease

Editor’s Note: Have you ever been that person? You know; the one who shuffles through security and holds up the line. These tips will help you better prepare for airport security, so you can get to your gate on time and keep the line moving in the process.
Before Heading to the Airport...
- Do not pack or bring Prohibited Items to the airport. Contact your airline if you have questions about a particular item.
- Place valuables such as jewelry, cash and laptops in carry-on baggage only.
- Tape your business card to the bottom of your laptop.
- Avoid wearing clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories that contain metal.
- Thorough screening includes x-ray inspection of footwear, so wear shoes that are easily removable to speed up the screening process.
- Screeners are very likely to ask you to remove the following footwear: boots; platform or thick-soled shoes; athletic shoes; or any footwear containing metal.
- Screeners are less likely to ask you to remove the following footwear: flip flops or other thin-soled sandals.
- Put all undeveloped film in your carry-on baggage, as checked baggage screening equipment will damage undeveloped film.
- Leave all checked baggage unlocked or use one of the following TSA-recognized locks: Travel Sentry (www.travelsentry.org) or Safe Skies (www.safeskieslocks.com). All other locks may be broken for screening purposes.
- Do not pack or bring wrapped gifts to the security checkpoint, as TSA may have to unwrap packages for screening purposes. Wrap on arrival or ship your gifts prior to your departure.
Getting Through Security…
- Keep your airline boarding pass and government-issued photo ID out until exiting the security checkpoint.
- Be mindful of TSA’s IN, OUT, OFF security policy.
- Place the following items IN your carry-on baggage or in a plastic bag prior to entering the screening checkpoint: Mobile phones; Keys; Loose change; Money clips; PDA's; Large amounts of jewelry; Metal hair decorations; Large belt buckles.
- Take your laptop and video cameras OUT of their cases and place them in a bin provided at the checkpoint.
- Take OFF all outer coats, suit coats, jackets and blazers before entering the security checkpoint.
