Insurance and Other Paperwork

  • Be sure that your driver's license and insurance policy are up to date. In case of an accident, you won't want to be without them.

  • When driving a rented car, ask about the agency's policy on emergency road help. If your agency doesn't provide road service, consider purchasing a membership in an auto club such as the American Automobile Association before your trip.

  • If you have an accident on the road, be sure to collect information about the other driver's license-plate number; his or her insurance company and policy number; make and year of the other vehicle; and date, time, and location of the accident. If you're driving a rented vehicle, notify your rental agency as soon as possible.

  • Before making your reservations, find out if your personal insurance covers liability and collision for rental cars. (If so, ask for specific details such as limitations, deductibles, etc.) Also be sure to check with your credit-card company about its policy regarding rental-car coverage.

  • For occasions such as an accident, a collison-damage waiver or other insurance offered by the rental agency can be helpful, as it will absolve you of any financial liability. Some premium credit cards also offer collision-damage coverage for certain rental situations, provided you charge the rental to the card. Coverage offered by credit cards generally extends to expenses not paid for by your own auto insurance company, such as policy deductibles. Be aware that some credit-card policies do not cover certain types of rental vehicles and do not apply in some destinations or in situations of driver negligence.
